Gaza conflict begins.

Hamas militants attack settlements in southern Israel, killing some 1,200 residents and taking some 250 hostages. The Israeli government responds with an invasion of Gaza that leaves some 34,000 dead and 2.3 million homeless over the next seven months and sparks cease-fire demonstrations throughout the world.
